Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade (CPTG) Essential oils

The CPTG process certifies that there are no added fillers, synthetic ingredients, or harmful contaminants in essential oils that would reduce their efficacy. Essential oils have been proven to have antimicrobial properties and hence have been used in cosmetics to reduce the need for adding synthetic preservatives.    (dōTERRA International, 2017)

Fractionated Coconut Oil

Fractionated Coconut Oil (FCO) contains 100% medium chain fatty acids which gives it the property of being readily absorbed through the skin, leaving skin feeling less greasy than other oils. The high fatty acid concentration of FCO also means that it can stand against oxidation very effectively and therefore has a very long shelf life.

Fractionated Coconut Oil is composed predominantly of Capric and Caprylic acid giving it antiseptic and disinfectant properties. FCO is soothing to the skin which helps reduce the symptoms of psoriasis, eczema, chapped lips, dry skin and skin inflammation (Organic Information Services, 2016).

Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Olive oil is an antioxidant when combined with the effects of FCO enrich the antiseptic benefits and long shelf life (self-preserving) properties of this cream.  Olive oil has also been used in the treatment of infant dermatitis and its use has been linked to statistically significant improvements in neonatal dermatitis symptoms (Al-Waili N.S 2005, p160). Its beneficial effects in treating infants who have dermatological problems of infancy when combined with beeswax and other natural products include properties which are antibacterial and antifungal.

Organic Beeswax

Beeswax in this product is used as its primary thickening agent and contributes to the cream’s semi-solid smooth composition. Beeswax forms a barrier to the skin where it is applied and has been proven effective in preventing infant nappy rash and has been used to treat dermatitis, eczema, fungal infections and inflammation  (Fratini, F. et al 2016, p. 839). The addition of beeswax as a thickening agent enables the product to remain on the area of skin where it is applied for a longer duration. The antibacterial and low allergenic properties of beeswax also enhance the properties of substances containing beeswax.

Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade Fennel Oil

Fennel Essential oil has is recognised as a galactagogue. It increases the amount of milk produced by lactating women by boosting the production of the hormone oestrogen. The milk of mothers who use this oil also find the digestive properties of fennel oil protect the baby from flatulence, indigestion and gas.

Fennel oil is antiparasitic, antiseptic, antispasmodic, antitoxic, diuretic and an expectorant. The stimulant properties of this oil are known to promote hormonal activity within the body to aid in the increased secretion of milk, sebum, sweat, tears, urine and discharges during menses. The stimulating effect also help to overcome fatigue, dizziness and depression (Organic Information Services(1), 2017)

Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade Clary Sage Oil

Clary sage essential oil has traditionally been used for abdominal cramps, emotional stress, oestrogen balance, hormonal balance, to start milk production (lactation), mood swings and postpartum depression. It is recognised for its properties as an anticonvulsant, antifungal, antiseptic, antispasmodic, astringent, nerve tonic and sedative. (Aroma Tools, 2017).

Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade Geranium Oil

Geranium Essential Oil has multiple uses. The properties of this oil that make it beneficial for use in Mother’s Milk balm are its analgesic, antibacterial, antifungal, anti-microbial and homeostasis. (Harris, L 2016).

Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade Basil Oil

Basil essential oil is a source of antioxidants, antibacterial agents and anti-inflammatory compounds and a has been used as a galactagogue. The exact mechanism by which basil enhances breastmilk supply is unknown, however traditional thoughts are that the taste of basil in breastmilk may enhance the breast drainage and suck of a breastfed baby and hence result in an increase in milk removal from the breast and hence increased breastmilk supply.

Basil essential oil also has antioxidant effects that have been shown to fight chronic infections, including bronchitis and respiratory illnesses. The strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities of basil oil can likely also benefit heart health, cognitive function and hence overall functioning of the body systems including mammary glands for milk production.
